Improving
Communication Skills

Improving communication skills evolves around understanding and knowing how to use the many different types of communication skills we have available to us.

The way we use our words and the tone of our voice to interact with others form our basic communication skills. Improving communication skills beyond this basic level involves knowing how to develop and use our non verbal communications skills.

Powerful communication skills can make sure our listener gets the true meaning of what we are saying.

It can connect us to people, help us to motivate people into taking action or resolve issues in a win-win situation for everyone.

Poor communication skills on the other hand can fail to get our message across, anger people or even alienate people from us.

Throughout time we have seen the importance of communication skills in our relationships with each other. Those with powerful communication skills such as Martin Luther King, JFK and Nelson Mandala have been able to communicate their dreams to the masses that inspired them to take action; Hilter was able to do the same but with vastly different consequences.

In contrast how many times have we seen poor communication skills lead to misunderstanding between people? Misunderstandings that can cause a rift between these people and leave them confused, hurt and maybe even angered.

From my experience improving communication skills stems from two main desires. Firstly we want to be able to get our message across.

Secondly we want to feel a connection with others on a level that goes beyond the superficial level we encounter each and every day with strangers and our occasional acquaintances.

To get our message across we need to know

  • how to excite people,
  • appeal to their senses and
  • get them involved in what we are saying.

Words alone are not enough, we need an understanding of how to use our tone, how to use our non verbal communication skills and to know what words work and which ones simply put up a brick wall between us and our intended audience.

Improving our communication skills will ultimately make it easier in teaching communication skills to our children.

By using the many different types of communication skills available in our everyday interaction with our kids we will automatically be teaching them good communication skills.

We will be our children’s role models for developing powerful communication skills.

We need to be adaptable to the unique needs of each of our children. To do this we need to be able to understand the make up of our children, see where there talents lie and what type of communicate skills will make it easier for them to learn and take action.
